Paperback's Pondering's: What It's Like to Re Read the Harry Potter Series

This post is longggg over due. I re read the series about 6 months ago, and for some reason I completely forgot to write this post. But, it's still something that I wanted to discuss, so without further adieu, this is my experience on re reading the entire Harry Potter series!

This was actually the first time I've re read the series in order. I usually only re read a book here and there. But, I had actually run out of books to read and felt like re reading something, so I decided to go with the entire series. While I can say that the series was as amazing as I remember, I did notice that I had some changes in my opinions.

I definitely think that I appreciated more of the lessons this time around. Maybe it's because I'm older (and perhaps a little wiser), but I felt like I paid more attention to the philosophies of life in the series rather than just paying attention to the magic like I did as a child. I think I had more to learn from this series.

I also realized that some books are better than others. When I read it while I was young, I was completely caught up in the hype that I was convinced that every book was perfect, but I can definitely say now that wasn't the case. I'm standing by my decision that Prisoner of Azkaban was the worst of the series, and definitely the most boring. There was just no plot.

My favourite still remained the same though, and that is Goblet of Fire. I loved the integration of the 3 schools together and Cedric was such an amazing minor character. It's also my go to movie to watch as well.

Not all of my opinions changed. Hermione was still my favourite female character, Fred was still my favourite male character, and I still believe that Dumbledore set Harry up for failure at times. But I also stayed true to my feelings that this is the best book series I've ever read, and that it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Have you re read the entire HP series? What did you think?

  1. Prisoner of Azkaban is one of my favourites! Along with Half-Blood Prince ofc ;) ...I'm beginning to think that I just like the really dark things... oops! :)

Goblet of Fire is actually my least favourite - sorry! Every time I've read it, it just felt reeeeeeally slow.

But oh well, to each his own and all that jazz :)

I love re-reading stuff, just because you end up reading things differently every time you open a book, and it shows just how *alive* books really are. *Stares mistily into the middle distance before laughing at own over-sincerity*

    1. That's interesting! To each their own I guess :) I don't re read that often at all but every time I do I'm reminded how great it is.

  2. Yesssss- I re-read this series this year too, however this was not the first time I re-read all the books in their order. I used to re-read the series once a year before uni started and I became busy :D HP will no doubt be my most favorite series forever, but yes, this time around I was able to spot places where I felt it could have been better and stuff. I'm always going to be extremely biased about HP, though, so my ratings will never change ;) And yessss- Hermione is still my favorite female lead too! Great post, Em! Anything HP is always welcome :D

    1. I wish I could have done that! Might have to make it a tradition now. I definitely agree that my reviews are always biased towards HP, I could find something that I didn't like but I can't change my review now lol!

  3. I'm actually reading Harry Potter for the first time this year and I enjoy it sooo much. However, I can admit that my feelings are different from most people who grew up with the books.
For example, I didn't find the first book that good. I think I didn't have much time to connect with the characters. My sister, though, who read these books several years ago and is a huge fan, disagreed with me entirely.
I'm glad you still had a great experience re-reading the series, but was also able to change your mind about a few things.

    1. Well I'm so happy you're liking it so far! I definitely see where you're coming from, reading a book when you're younger vs. reading it when you're a teen if definitely different.

  4. I love rereading Harry Potter, there are so many little things I forget or hadn't noticed before. I don't know which one would be my least favourite but I know a lot of people's favourite is Prisoner of Azkaban but I didn't like it as much as the others. I've always loved Goblet or Fire and I also love Half Blood Prince so I think my favourites would have to be those two.
