Month in Review: August

Summer is over, and I'm getting ready to go back to school. I have to admit, I'm a little bit nervous, as pursuing a graduate degree is a whole different environment and I am feeling a little bit overwhelmed with information. However, everyone has been super nice so far so I am confident that things will go smoothly. Before I leave summer behind, let's recap how August went:

What I Read:

Dial A For Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto: 5/5 stars

Dear Senthuran by Akwaeke Emezi: 5/5 stars

Misfit in Love by S.K. Ali: 4/5 stars

Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano: 4/5 stars

Full Disclosure by Camryn Garrett: 5/5 stars

Sisters of the Snake by Sarena and Sasha Nanua: 4/5 stars

The Witch King by H.E. Edgmon: 4/5 stars

Moccasin Square Gardens by Richard Van Camp: 4/5 stars

Favourite Book: Dial A For Aunties was by far my favourite book of the month. It was funny, charming, full of family dynamics and also reminded me a bit of Crazy Rich Asians, which was a huge plus. I got really into funny thriller books this month, and this book topped them all.

What I Blogged:

My favourite post this month was My Five Problems with Dark Academia. Honestly, this post was a long time coming. I've kept my issues with the genre inside for so long, and it was good to finally rant.

Favourite Blog Posts:

Life Stuff:

As a whole, my summer was... ok. COVID put an obvious damper on things, as did the weather. It was rainy for most of the summer, and usually I love being able to sit outside. However, August wasn't all bad. I got a new tattoo, a trident on the back of my arm, for my love of Greek mythology and the Percy Jackson series. It makes me feel so confident and I love looking at it in the mirror.

I also got to do some more comic book shopping, and hang out with work friends. I think I got some of my pre-COVID confidence back, so I was able to socialize a bit more, within reason of course.

As I said before, now I am preparing for school and stressing out just a little bit. I am a mixture of being excited for new opportunities, including being able to be a teaching assistant, but also a little bit nervous. But I think nerves are a normal part of any new environment. Overall, I do think there are good things to come.

That was my August! How was yours?

  1. This sounds like a good month, both book-wise and life-wise! I'm sure there are indeed, exciting and rewarding things to come for you (teaching assistant! I'm so proud of you).

I'm not a tattoo person, but the trident looks nice! Different from the usual stuff people get, and a great statement without being too invasive 🙂. Also, if it makes you feel more confident, it can only be a good thing!

    1. Thanks Roberta! I was a bit afraid of getting a tattoo so big, but then I realized I really wanted it, and life's too short. I'm glad I took the plunge. Have a great September!

  2. Good luck with all the university stuff Em! You rock, OK? Don't forget it! It's a long way to Canada for me to come and remind you, and I don't have a passport ;)

    Congrats on the tattoo! :)

And thank you so much for linking to my post - you're awesome, Em! <3

  3. I'm really excited to read Dial A For Aunties and the fact that you compared it to Crazy Rich Asians makes me even more excited to finally read it. I love your tattoo and I'm glad it's made you so happy! :D I relate to socializing more recently but still worrying about Covid... I wish it would just go away because it's so frustrating to always wonder if I'll catch it (even with the vaccine). Yay for being a teaching assistant! Excited for you and I hope you'll have a good September. :)

    1. Thanks Veronika! I believe Sabrina read it and she said she had some issues, but still enjoyed it. I hope you give it a go! COVID is tough because it's so unpredictable. I hope you stay safe :)

  5. You are rocking it!
Your tattoo is awesome, and super proud of you for doing the teaching assistant thing and happy to hear you are getting some confidence back.
    Thanks for featuring my post!

How was the tattoo pain for that area? I've decided I'm going to get another piercing soon, but waiting for a few events to pass first so that if I have a rough time with healing (aka redness and grossness) that it isn't forever immortalized in photos.

    1. Thank you, Shayna! The pain was about a medium. My first tattoo hurt the most, my second hurt the least, and this was right in the middle. Overall, it was bearable and done quicker than I thought it was going to. Hope your piercing healing is quick and painless!
