Month in Review: May

It's finally hot again! I love summer. I love being able to sit outside, I love going on walks, and I love summer fashion. So, I am thrilled that summer weather is back. It definitely brightens up my mood. Anyways, here's what happened in May:

What I Read:

The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline: 5/5 stars

24 Hours in Ancient Rome by Phillip Matyszak: 3/5 stars

Shadows Cast by Stars by Catherine Knutsson: 4/5 stars

Lost in the Never Woods by Aiden Thomas: 4/5 stars

Will My Cat Eat by Eyeballs? by Caitlin Doughty: 4/5 stars

The Voyage to Avalon by Julie Leung: 4/5 stars

All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson: 4/5 stars

You Say It First by Katie Cotugno: 2/5 stars

Favourite Book: I re-read The Marrow Thieves to prepare for my masters degree and I loved it even more the second time around. It is a hard read, but it is full of some amazing characters and a powerful storyline. Please give it a read.

What I Blogged:

I didn't post too much in May, but I did combine my love for Marvel with my love for books by Fancasting Book Characters with Marvel Characters. It was a fun crossover for sure :)

Life Stuff:

At the beginning of May I got my wisdom teeth taken out. It was pretty quick and mostly painless, and I'm just happy to have gotten it over with. One thing that really bummed me out was not being able to eat all the foods I love for a good week. I would watch my sister eat candy and it really put my mood off haha! But, I'm all good now :)

I also got my first dose of Covid vaccine! I am so happy, because Canada's vaccine rollout has been terrible. While I did get some side effects, they were so worth it. If you are eligible, go get vaxxed!

The end of the month has been pretty busy. I am attending some conferences on Indigenous literature to prepare myself for September, and I also have to prepare for virtual graduation in June. I am a pretty shy person so a virtual graduation was a welcome thing for me, but of course I would much rather have an in-person graduation then be in a global pandemic. I guess it's just one of the sacrifices we have to make.

Other than that, I've been doing as much work as I can outside in the beautiful weather. I said this already, but I just love summer so much. I am looking forward to many more sunny days ahead.

That was my May. How was yours?

  1. I am loving the nicer weather! And glad your wisdom teeth wasn't too terrible. I've had mine out too and the first time wasn't bad, the second was a tad rougher. :) It's nice when it's all over!

    1. Yay! Crying is healthy, it washes away all the bad :)

      Hugs.

  3. All good news this month, hurrah!

"I also have to prepare for virtual graduation in June".
I will probably be surreal! But yay, graduation! What happens in September? You probably told us before, but I guess I forgot 😳.

    1. Haha, that's ok, Roberta! In September, I'm working on a masters dissertation on Indigenous literature. Right now I'm actually attending a virtual conference on Indigenous lit to prepare myself, so I'm getting a lot of handy information. Exciting times are ahead!

Hope you have a great June :)

  4. Yay, A fellow lover of summer! Honestly, it’s brightened up my mood so much, and I am super grateful for it (and the extra sunlight in the evenings!) Okay, so I am laughing super hard at the title “Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?” haha. That is incredible.
I’m so glad you liked my post – thanks so much for sharing 😊
Yep, definitely the worst part about the wisdom teeth was not being able to eat well for a while. Was your swelling bad? I didn’t swell much until about day 3 and then I just ballooned up. Congrats on getting that over with, as well as getting your first vaccine! I did too, and yeah, the side effects weren’t fun, but really weren’t that bad or long lasting for me.

    1. Yeah, that book is actually from a mortician who answers children's questions about death. It was a super funny and also informative novel, I highly recommend!

Wisdom teeth wise, I was the same as you. I was fine until day three and then my jaw looked so weird haha. But nothing a little ice couldn't fix.

I saw your tweet about getting the vaccine, woohoo! I did get a fever as a side effect which was weird because I haven't had a fever in forever, but it cleared up after a day.

The extra sunlight in the evenings is just what I needed. I can actually go for walks after dinner without it being pitch black.

Hope you have a great June, Shayna!

    2. I felt warm, but didn't end up getting a fever, although one of my friends did. I just basically felt like I had a cold but without the stuffy nose (aches, tiredness, overall icky feeling).
Rough start to my month, but hoping it picks up. I hope yours is good :)

  5. My sister recently read Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? It seemed like a very interesting read about a topic people usually don't like to talk about - death. I read your Marvel post and I really liked it! Congratulations on getting your wisdom teeth removed. I'm not looking forward to it, I type and write with a pen in my mouth so I probably won't be able to do anything afterwards. Congrats also on your Covid vaccine, the roll out here in the Netherlands is also awful. It probably won't be another year until I get called to receive it.

    1. I actually got the recommendation for that book from your sister's youtube channel! I'm so glad I decided to pick it up, it was a very interesting read.

The only good thing I can say about wisdom teeth removal is that I got to eat a lot of ice cream and chocolate pudding, which I love. But I'm sure that will be hard. I hope you heal up quickly so you can get back to writing and typing soon after!

The roll out in Canada has been awful as well, but oh my goodness, a whole year? That is very upsetting. Fingers crossed things speed up sooner.

I'm glad you enjoyed my Marvel post :) Have a great June!
