We also I think need to work on highlighting Indigenous authors all the time, not just when something bad happens. paperbackprincesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07446601964387517150noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717251772632628978.post-86625834223433045412021-06-14T10:35:46.179-04:002021-06-14T10:35:46.179-04:00For sure! They're put up on a pedestal and yet so much of the commonwealth was built on colonization. paperbackprincesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07446601964387517150noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717251772632628978.post-87283922449866765302021-06-14T05:30:57.744-04:002021-06-14T05:30:57.744-04:00There's very much a sense of Indigenous people...There's very much a sense of Indigenous people being a Canada/US/Australia/NZ/wherever-else-the-government-ended-up thing. Not a 'here' thing. Not an 'us' thing. Which is why most people in the UK don't have a clue just how horrible we were as an imperial power.

But then, a UK government minister referred to Welsh - the indigenous language of the UK - as a foreign language the other day, so... yeah, long, complex, colonising history all round.

I'm with you though - it's v. frustrating. They're not books that I can just pick up from the library (although, in fairness, my small rural library is surprisingly well stocked with diverse reads,) so I have to plan my purchases. I suspect the lack of availability and the price is part of the reason the library don't have them, too.Cee Arr @ Dora Readshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04074909561530525221noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717251772632628978.post-36800420857012981252021-06-13T23:38:35.709-04:002021-06-13T23:38:35.709-04:00I just can't believe this- we really have no i...I just can't believe this- we really have no idea how horribly indigenous cultures were treated, but we find out all the time when this stuff comes out. how horrific. I'm so thankful that indigenous authors are getting published- thank you for sharing these. You'd think that they'd want to be more aware of these issues. *sighs* paperbackprincesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07446601964387517150noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717251772632628978.post-36689100005564232982021-06-12T14:36:04.695-04:002021-06-12T14:36:04.695-04:00I have so many books by Indigenous authors on my T...I have so many books by Indigenous authors on my TBR, but it can be quite tricky to find somewhere - either shop or library - that stocks them in the UK and doesn't cost the earth. Which is... interesting, considering how readily available, and relatively affordable, most mainstream (mostly White-authored,) US and Canadian fiction is here.Cee Arr @ Dora Readshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04074909561530525221noreply@blogger.com
